A thought for the week
The radical conservatives like to talk about how they have "moral values" and the rest of us are just a bunch of evil monsters. They contribute quite a lot of spittle to their arguments, so it's easy to accept on face value their sincerity.
So why is it that they always try to wrap up their carnivorous laws and policies in liberal values?
Why do they call reducing clean air standards the Clear Skies Act? Why do they call allowing more pollutants and, yes, poisons in our drinking water the Clean Water Act? Why do they call increased logging of old-growth forests (the kind that take centuries to replace) the Healthy Forests Act? Why do they pretend that throwing everyone's retirement into the unsecured, unpredictable stock market is strengthening Social Security? Why do they call a children's education program that leaves all kinds of children behind No Child Left Behind? Why do they take away your right to sue a doctor for malpractice and call it tort reform? Why do they take away your right to declare bankruptcy from medical expenses and call it abuse of credit reform?
Why all these ruses and so many more?
Why do they pretend to have "liberal" values?
Because the moral values held by these radical conservatives are not the moral values We The People hold, and they know it. Because progressive moral values are mainstream values, and they know it. Because if we American citizens really got a clear picture of what they are up to, we would not like it one bit. Not one bit.
Their agenda is not in the mainstream at all. That is why they hide. That is why they spin. That is why they smirk. That is why they wrap themselves in the flag and Bible all at once. That is why they lie.
Earth Day is Friday. Watch this week how they all will pretend to be environmentalists. (Just don't get too worked up about it, because they'll be busy blowing up the Senate and confirming activist bigots to the bench. Feints within feints, don't ya know?)

I have always noticed the conservatives use of double speak but am amazed that others don't.
Lakoff
Lakoff says it's an indication where they're weak, and I think he's right. The mistake I think progressives make is thinking that all we need to do is present the facts. The problem is that most "red" voters don't want to believe that their heroes are lying, and so they reject the facts.
