Mac is back, but the web is on a Safari

What can I say? After all my whining, I ended up getting an iMac to replace my prematurely deceased PowerBook. I could say that I got it for it's beautiful design or because I'm an Apple junkie or because I am boycotting Redmond. But really, I got it for work. It seems there just isn't any DVD authoring software that compares with DVD Studio Pro -- not for the price. So I got the Mac so I could continue using the software. How rare is that? It used to be that people would avoid Apple for that very reason.

This thing is a big bump up from the PowerBook. Bigger screen, for starters. Wow! And the resolution! It's a G5, which technically makes it faster than the G4 laptop, but so far I have not seen much difference. And it has a bigger drive, so I can finally load in my 25GB of mp3s and play them. I've missed my music. It doesn't help that my car plays only regular CDs. I sold all of them off back in a time of desperate determination, so I've had only the few CDs I burned before Mister Buggy Crashy came along, plus a couple of new ones. Now all I need is an iPod.

My only complaint about the computer itself at this point is the fan. It's kind of buzzy. Still much quieter than just about any desktop computer, but you definitely know it's on.

Also, I -erm- I miss being able to go online in bed. :o

But here's my real complaint: Safari is damn good at screwing up blog pages. Just in a little casual browsing tonight, I found at least three pages stacked vertically, columns end-to-end. I suppose I'll have to be downloading Firefox again soon. What with IE and Safari, it takes an open source browser to actually view websites correctly.

I'd grumble more, but I'm too happy with my new toy.

There are few joys like the one of having a new Mac. Enjoy! And take heart - Safari is all I use. Most sites do fine, and I usually find that the ones that have difficulties get better as people update them.

I much prefer Firefox for a browser. Faster, cleaner, better features.

I really like Mac, but they really seem to have problems with hardware. Now I'm dealing with a buzzy fan on this iMac. Seems like it's yet another major hardware problem that Apple may or may not acknowledge.

Have you updated your software yet? Sometimes there's a fix in the updates.
