But what will Oscar say?

Rox offers up a view that AMPAS will find a way to honor both Mel Gibson and Michael Moore. Hmmmm..... I feel it's going to go differently.

Firstly, I think there's no way that the Academy is going to honor Michael Moore for some time now. They do not like political grandstanding. You're supposed to be a good system cog and thank your producers and agent and, if you're very brief, your family (unless he or she also is in the industry), and then float off stage and give the news media their backstage sound bites. Look at what happened to Vanessa Redgrave, who pretty much became persona non grata after speaking out about Palestinians (in remarks that would be considered quite benign and rather obvious, today). When Moore spoke about the "fictitious president" and "fictitious war" when he was last at the Oscar podium, there were boos in the audience. Yes, the general political climate has changed, but he got his box office and (I think, anyway) "Bowling for Columbine" was a better film. Given the radical right's fixation on Moore (even talking about the "Michael Moore wing of the Democratic Party" which is a laugh), I think Moore will not get a nod. (But expect another political doc to get honored.)

Mel Gibson it seems also has Hollywood political problems, perhaps not so much over his movie or bloody vision of what constitutes religious faith, but more over his rather arrogant and self-righteous declarations about women and choice. My intuition tells me that his movie might be honored for its gory special effects, but probably not for best picture, not with all the buzz around Kinsey and Ray and Sideways and a few others that I've not seen.

Of course, what do I know? I don't even live north of Wilshire. Heck, I don't even live in California!

Matsu says:

I do not care for Bush - an understatement if there ever was one, but I did find Fahrenheit 911 to be offensive. If the Right Wing were to make a movie about the left that was so Naderian (as in Ralph Nader) the Left would be (validly) angry over it.

Fahrenheit 911 had a few moments that were brilliant, but in large part it was forgettable and I think it will not stand the test of time.
